The term Wo-lakota means peaceful, responsible and caring - a compassionate and generous people. Wolakota Foundation encourages people to step forward in recognizing the value of their own cultural roots and in so doing, reconnect with the strengths and wisdom that all traditional cultures hold in common - our connection to each other and to the Earth.
Wolakota Foundation is a grassroots nonprofit organization emerging from the needs of traditional Lakota (Dakota/Nakota) people to maintain their cultural and spiritual lifeways for the sake of future generations. Since its inception, the organization has sought to promote and protect as well as educate others about the traditional values and wisdom of Indigenous People.
Through their core projects, Wolakota Foundation seeks to protect sacred sites throughout the world, promote dialogue among indigenous people, encourage traditional values and skills along earth-friendly technologies, seek sustainable solutions to environmental abuse, and educate the succeeding generation to become responsible, well-balanced human beings.
Wolakota Foundation is the outgrowth of the annual World Peace and Prayer Day celebrations begun in 1996 by Chief Arvol Looking Horse. They are presently promoting the creation of a mass awareness of “all nations, all faiths, one prayer” by encouraging everyone to take time on June 21st and join in the united prayer/meditation to heal Grandmother Earth. They also continue to work towards having June 21st recognized by the United Nations as "Honoring Sacred Sites Day", in an effort to protect places that people consider sacred.
